The Santa Cruz Recycled Art Program (SCRAP) offers selected artists access to the waste stream at the City’s Resource Recovery Facility on Dimeo Lane with the mission of highlighting our growing landfill problem and culture of waste. SCRAP is just one way the City is encouraging people to think differently about their own trash.

Our SCRAP artists spend four months gleaning metal, wood, paper, and just about everything imaginable to make art out of. The finished art is then displayed in a month-long gallery exhibit. SCRAP has quickly gained brand recognition. Our selected artists enjoy media attention as well as the opportunity to exhibit in a gallery setting.

In fitting with the mission of SCRAP, education and outreach are key. Outreach includes "crafternoons" at the Museum of Art and History in Abbott Square, tours of the dump with local elementary school children who get to talk with artists and learn about recycling.
